Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, father of famous poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, founded Santiniketan in 1862 AD mainly due to the attraction of the natural beauty and equanimity of the locality, near the small town Bolpur in West Bengal. Maharshi Debendranath Tagore established a trust in 1863 for running the Santhiniketan. He committed the new trust with the task of arrangement a fair, Paush Mela, with a primary aim of disseminating a new religious faith acknowledged as Brahmo Dharmo. Currently the major solemnization in Santhiniketan and a major attraction for holidaymakers is Paush Mela, dealt every year in December.
